Parents and children alike enjoyed a night of fun, games, food and community during Saturday's festivities.It was an incredible night of fun and community as Independence celebrated its 15th birthday on Saturday, March 30.
Residents flocked to the town square to enjoyed cupcakes and ice cream in the community center, while kids played games and danced the afternoon away. Meanwhile food trucks were on hand to offer up tasty, local grub for those looking for real food.
The night's highlight was the lighting of lanterns that were left to float in the pool in front of the clocktower, before a viewing of Disney's "Tangled" capped of the festivities.
The American Cancer Society held the West Orange Relay for Life Saturday, March 30, at the Chain of Lakes Middle School.Local students and West Orange residents gathered at the Chain of Lake Middle School Saturday afternoon to participate the West Orange Relay for Life. Attendees helped fundraise to support the American Cancer Society's mission. The society aims to support cancer research and programs that provide resources for cancer patients. In 2017, United States-based Relay for Life events raised a total of $230 million. About $6.3 billion has been raised in the U.S. since the movement was founded in 1985.
Local families decorated and raced rubber ducks at Mead Botanical Garden on Saturday, March 30.Families made special memories together and took part in a Winter Park tradition as they raced rubber ducks in The Great Duck Derby on Saturday, March 30, at Mead Botanical Garden. Children had the chance to decorate their adopted rubber ducks with paint before sending them off to the big race across Alice's Pond. The event also included face painting, games, bounce houses and other activities.
UCP of Central Florida put on a glamorous gala weekend as part of a weekend of festivities.UCP of Central Florida put on a grand fundraiser with its 26th annual “An Evening at the Palace” gala on Saturday, March 30. The evening event, held at the Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace at Disney Springs, had a number of comedy skits as well as musical numbers from UCP students. Three guest hosts - Rachael Harris, RJ Mitte and Cheryl Hines - emceed the event along with special guest Dan Aykroyd. UCP of Central Florida provides support, education and therapy services for more than 3,500 children with and without disabilities each year.

Nona adventure park celebrates grand opening in Lake NonaNona Adventure Park is celebrating its grand opening on Saturday, March 23 with a day full of activities for the whole family including complimentary park entrance, giveaways, professional demonstrations, all-ages competitions, face painting, and more. The park is open Saturday from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
New Advanced Metering System for our Water UtilityAs part of the City of Lake Mary’s ongoing commitment to maintain a high quality of life for our citizens through cost- effective, innovative systems, contractors working for Lake Mary are installing an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system for our water utility.
The project includes enhancing nearly every residential and commercial water meter in Lake Mary with new, state-of-the art technology that can wirelessly communicate usage data to our billing department. We started upgrading the system in December, a process that will take up to four months to complete. Once installed, advanced meter technology will be able to collect multiple remote meter reads per day, allowing for better leak detection and improved customer service.

Oviedo American legion post 243 honored by The Seminole County Board of County ComissionersAt its March 12, 2019, Commission Meeting, the Seminole County Board of Commissioners proclaimed March 15th as American Legion Centennial Day in Seminole County, Florida. The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919, as a wartime veterans organization based on the four pillars of Veterans Affairs: Rehabilitation; National Security; Americanism; and Children & Youth. Over the years, the American Legion has become a preeminent community-service organization with more than 2.5 million members in over 14,000 American Legion Posts worldwide. The American Legion offers a variety of programs that support the four pillars, and benefit veterans; service members and their families; America’s youth; and citizens in general. Members of the American Legion are dedicated to upholding the ideals of freedom and democracy, while working to make a difference in the lives of fellow Americans. The American Legion celebrated its centennial in 2019 on March 15th, the official designated birthday of the American Legion.
2019 Summer Camp Field TripsSummer Camp registration begins Monday, March 18th. Registration will continue until the Thursday before each session or until each session is full. Camps offered are Adventure Camp, Club Riverside, and Volleyball Camp.
